Tips for keeping personal information private 
  • Use passwords that are not real words from a dictionary.
  • Use a combination of numbers & letters that remind you of a favorite song or movie.
  • Don't write it down, unless it's in a secure location which also requires password or key.
  • Never give out tax IDs over the phone unless you called a secure vendor you know.
  • If they called you, you have no way to verify it really is your bank or credit card company.
  • Use security provided with your flash drive to secure information, don't just copy it. 
  • Downloading anti-virus and anti-spyware is easy, but re-installation can be a pain when your system crashes.  When possible, buy the CD or DVD so that when your hard drive quits, only the updates have to be reloaded on-line.

 

Tips on avoiding Identity Theft

 

  1. Be careful what you publish on your webpage, like birthdates, geneology, even pictures (which can be downloaded and altered to make you look like you did something you didn't or used to create an ID with your picture).  If you do share such information, use a secure website where users have to log in.  Office Live has a feature where you can put documents, photos and spreadsheets in shared workspace and enter the email addresses of people you want to invite to your site. 
  2. Protect your social security number; don't give it out to comebody over the phone with which you do not have a business relationship.  Credit card offers are typical scams.  If it is your credit card company making a special offer, they already know your SS#.
  3. Have checks come to a P O Box or delivered to your bank, don't leave blank checks from the printer in your mailbox all day.
  4. Programs are now available to scan and put together the shreaded paper.  Use a cross cut shreader, even soak it in water with bleach to fade the print before drying and shreading.
  5. If you have sensitive documents in Acrobat, use the security feature to add passwords.  If you have spreadsheets with sensitive data, use passwords to open.
