PHYSICIANS WANT TO KNOW what you want them to do if you are unable to tell them at the moment.  If you are awake, you can still tell them, but if you are in a comma, and your heart stops, they don’t know what you want unless you put it in writing. Regardless of whether you support healthcare reform, please sign a physician’s directive and take the guess work out of health management…..take the pressure off your family when one daughter wants to keep you alive and the other knows you wouldn’t want to live as a vegetable in a nursing home.  Make the decision ahead of time, sign the papers, and tell them what you signed so they don’t argue at your bedside.
